Furano has a good variety of activities to enjoy along with your ski holiday. Back Country tours, Onsen (hot spring visits), culture night performances including a snapshot of the Furano navel (Belly Button!) Festival, Hot air ballooning, a stack of good restaurants and bars, ice fishing are some of the activities easily accessed in Furano.
Snow shoe trekking, see snow mobiling, and dog sled rides are amongst some of the non ski activities available in Furano.
Goto Sumio's art museum is a must on a non ski day - Goto Sumio is one of Japan's finest contemporary artists.
Not far from Furano, a trip to Asahiyama zoo in Ashidake town to see the famous Emperor Penguins walk through the zoo, the polar bears and seals are also a great hit. Asahidake has a sake factory and some very famous ramen noodle soup restaurants. It's location on the direct road and rail links from the Ohkotsk sea fishing ports makes it a great place to eat seafood and the town is a central distribution point for seafood throughout Hokkaido. A bit further afield, the 'diamond dust' in the evenings at Kawayu lakes is a very pretty activity.
Pay a visit to the Furano Connection office or Alpine visitors Center - both just a short wak from the Kitanomine Gondola to help you organise any of these activities.
